The Midweek Case

Same hotel. Different week.

The Santa Ynez Valley is a weekend destination, and it behaves like one. Friday afternoon the tasting rooms fill, the good tables go, and the two lane roads between the vineyards turn into a queue. By Sunday evening all of that has gone home.

What is left from Sunday to Thursday is the version of the valley the people who live here actually use. Appointments where you wanted them. A pour from whoever is actually making the wine. A table at S.Y. Kitchen without planning your week around it. And a fourteen key hotel with enough room to give you the quiet corner rather than the last one.

We do not discount the middle of the week. We give it more.

Who Travels Midweek

Five kinds of guest who can leave on a Tuesday

The way to fill the middle of the week is to talk to the people who can actually travel in it. These five can, and the hotel is built for all of them.

The best fit

Small Corporate Offsites

Fourteen keys is an awkward size for a conference hotel and exactly the right size for a leadership team. A group of fifteen to twenty five takes the whole property, and there is nobody else in it.

  • No lobby traffic and nobody at the next table to overhear the session
  • Two properties a short walk apart, so the working day and the sleeping quarters are not the same building
  • Breakfast and the evening aperitif already handled, which is two meals nobody has to organise
  • September and October are when fourth quarter offsites get booked, and they are our quietest midweeks

Two hours from Los Angeles

Remote and Flexible Workers

Leave Tuesday morning, work from the porch that afternoon, and be in a tasting room by Wednesday at four. Close enough to drive, far enough that nobody asks you to come in.

No schedule to work around

Retirees and Empty Nesters

The guests who read the reviews before they book, come for the breakfast as much as the wine, and have no particular reason to travel on a Saturday.

Wedding and Event Vendors

Photographers, planners and crews who shoot here on a Saturday and stay through the week. The people who will also be recommending a venue to their next couple.

Production Crews

The valley shoots commercials and editorial all year. Crews need several rooms at once, midweek, close to the location, with breakfast on site and a car park that fits the trucks.

The Offsite

Fourteen keys, and nobody else in them.

A whole property week is far easier to arrange from Sunday to Thursday than it is across a weekend, which is the single best reason to run the offsite then. Your group decides how to split the two sides.

  • 8 Bungalows

Freestanding, each with its own front door, porch and kitchenette, on the Sagunto Street side. People keep their own hours without keeping anyone else awake.

    • Bungalow 7, the historic tower, sleeps more than one
    • Bungalow 3 is step free
  • 6 Suites

Inside the main house on Edison Street, directly over the lobby, the dining room and the porch where breakfast and the aperitif are served. The working half of the estate.

    • Balconies and terraces on 12, 13 and 14
    • Room 9 is step free

The Midweek Product

Three ways to take the week

The rate does not fall on a Tuesday. What changes is how much of the hotel, the valley and our attention you get for it.

For remote and flexible workers

The Work Week

Sunday to Friday, five nights

  • Breakfast made here every morning, and specialty coffee and lattes all morning
  • The Polo House Aperitif every evening, local wine and seasonal bites in the wine garden
  • Somewhere to work that is not the bed, between the porch, the lobby and your own bungalow
  • Quiet hours from nine to nine, which on a Tuesday means the whole property
Check five nights

For teams of fifteen to twenty five

The Offsite

Two to four nights, whole property

  • All fourteen keys, both properties, and nobody else checked in
  • The main house for the working day, the bungalows for the sleeping
  • Both meals already covered, so the agenda is the only thing to write
  • The concierge arranges the rest, tables held on our street, tastings, cars for the group
Call to hold the property

For anyone with a free Tuesday

The Quiet Week

Two to four nights, Sunday to Thursday

  • Tasting appointments that are actually available, at Sunstone, Sanford, Demetria Estate and Roblar
  • The cedar barrel sauna when you want it rather than when it is free
  • Dinner on our own street, on foot, without booking three weeks out
  • The fire pit, which midweek tends to be yours
Check midweek dates

None of these is a discounted rate with a name on it. They are three shapes of week, and everything listed under them is simply what the house does every day.

The Direct Booking Promise

What booking with us directly is worth

Six things a booking site cannot give you, because five of them require somebody at this address and the sixth is the rate itself.

Booking a block of rooms, or the whole property? That conversation does not belong on a booking site at all. Call (805) 362-0606 or write to polohouse@polohousehotel.com.

Sunday to Thursday

What a midweek actually looks like

Not an itinerary and not a package. This is the shape the days take on their own when you arrive on a Sunday and leave on a Thursday.

Arrive Against the Traffic

Everyone else is driving south out of the valley while you are driving into it. Check in runs four to six, and the car stays where you leave it.

“Wonderful hotel in a cute town with shops, coffee, bakeries, etc but not crowded. Much better than staying in super crowded Solvang, which you can visit in just a 7 minute drive. Convenient to everything.”

Questions we hear about midweek

Is the midweek rate lower than the weekend rate?

Rates move with the season and with what is left, so check your own dates rather than take a rule from us. What we do not do is run a standing midweek discount. The argument for Sunday to Thursday is that you get more of the hotel and more of the valley, not that the room is cheaper.

Everything included in a weekend stay is included midweek: breakfast every morning, the Polo House Aperitif every evening, specialty coffee all morning, the cedar barrel sauna and the concierge.

Can we book the whole property for an offsite?

Yes, and midweek is by far the easiest time to do it. The property is fourteen keys, six suites in the main house on Edison Street and eight freestanding bungalows on Sagunto Street, a short walk apart. A group of fifteen to twenty five fits the whole estate comfortably.

Whole property stays are arranged by phone rather than online. Call (805) 362-0606, every day 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, or write to polohouse@polohousehotel.com. For groups of four rooms or more the balance is due 60 days before check in.

Can I work from here?

Guests do, and it is one of the reasons the middle of the week fills. There is the porch, the lobby lounge in the main house, and the bungalows, each of which has its own front door and its own kitchenette, so a day of calls does not have to happen from the end of a bed.

Outdoor areas close at 9:00 pm and quiet hours run 9:00 pm to 9:00 am. Midweek, that quiet generally starts a good deal earlier.

What are check in and check out?

Check in runs 4:00 to 6:00 pm and check out is 10:00 am. The front desk is unstaffed overnight, so let us know in advance if you will be arriving late. The desk itself answers every day from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

How far is it from Los Angeles?

A little over two hours by car, which is the whole reason a Tuesday works. Santa Barbara is about forty minutes south, Solvang is seven minutes west and Los Olivos is about ten minutes north. Our addresses are 1121 Edison Street and 3523 Sagunto Street, Santa Ynez.

Can we bring the dog?

Pets are welcome in Bungalows 1 to 6, the six standalone cottages on the Sagunto side, for a $75 fee per stay. Bungalows 7 and 8 and the six main house suites are pet free.

What does it cost to bring extra people?

Rates are based on double occupancy. Each additional adult is $50 a night, children ages two to eleven are $25 a night and children under two stay free. Extra guests are only possible in select rooms, so tell us the numbers when you book.

When is the balance due, and can I change the dates?

For an individual reservation the balance is due 21 days before check in, after which the stay is non-refundable. For groups of four rooms or more it is 60 days. If something moves, call us before those dates rather than after: booked direct, that conversation is with the same people who will be checking you in.

We shoot in the valley. Can you take a crew?

Yes, and blocks of rooms are far easier to release midweek. Tell us how many rooms, which nights and roughly what the call times look like, and we will tell you what we can hold. Call (805) 362-0606 or write to polohouse@polohousehotel.com.
