Solvang Julefest 2026 is the village’s Danish Christmas festival, running every day from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. For six weeks, Solvang lights every gable, fills its park with music each night and keeps its old traditions close, which makes it the best reason to spend Christmas on the Central Coast. Here is what is on, and what is worth seeing.

What Is Solvang Julefest?
Julefest means “Yule festival” in Danish, and Solvang, founded by Danish settlers in 1911, celebrates it in earnest. Nisser, the mischievous elves of Danish folklore, hide around the village. Æbleskiver, round pancake puffs dusted with powdered sugar, come warm from the pan. Families carry home Scandinavian ornaments from the julehus, and by five o’clock the half timbered storefronts and windmills are outlined in light.
The Best Things to See and Do at Julefest
The Light and Music Show
When: nightly, November 27 to January 3, on the hour from 5 to 9 pm. Where: Solvang Park.
Ten free minutes of light and music, rain or shine. “Timeless Echoes,” the traditional program, plays at 5, 6 and 8 pm; “Radiant Beats,” the modern one, at 7 and 9 pm; and “New Year’s Melodies” takes over from December 26. In recent seasons the shows have ended with a soft flurry of faux snow.
The 5 pm show is the busiest; the 8 pm is the calmest and, in our view, the loveliest. Guests at our hotel near Solvang for Christmas take the Polo House Aperitif first, then drive seven minutes for the eight o’clock show.
Tree Lighting Ceremony
When: Friday, December 4, 2026, at 5:30 pm. Where: Solvang Park.
Ballet from Fossemalle Dance Studio, live music and caroling lead up to the lighting of the village tree. Arrive by 5 pm for a clear view, then stay for the 6 pm light show.
Julefest Parade
When: Saturday, December 5, 2026, 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. Where: downtown Solvang.
More than fifty entries of floats, bands and horses wind through the village, with Santa waiting at the end. Bring a folding chair and claim a curb by 10:30 am.
Makers Market
When: Wednesdays, December 2, 9, 16 and 23, 3 to 7 pm. Where: Solvang Park.
Solvang’s Christmas market, modeled on European night markets, with local artisans, crafters and food vendors beside the Solvang Farmers Market. It runs rain or shine; arrive around 4 pm and stay for the 5 pm show.
Santa’s Village
When: weekends, November 28 to December 20, 12 to 4 pm. Where: Solvang Park.
Santa receives visitors at his gingerbread house every Saturday and Sunday through December 20. On Saturday, December 12, from 10 am to noon, Photos with Santa Paws welcomes the family dog; for photo pricing, check solvangusa.com.
Candlelight and Nisse Walking Tours
When: select dates through the season; check solvangusa.com for times and tickets.
“Hygge, Holiday & Hans Christian Andersen” is a candlelit evening walk through local history and fairy tale; “Nisse Mischief & Merriment” is a playful version for families. Both are ticketed and sell out on busy weekends, so book as soon as dates appear.
The Nisser Adventure
When: all season. Where: clue list at the Solvang Visitor Center, 1639 Copenhagen Drive.
A free village-wide hunt for the hidden nisser. It turns a stroll between bakeries into a quest for children of any age.

Solvang rings in midnight on Danish time, at 3 pm Pacific, with an 80s tribute band and a family friendly party that ends well before dark.
Christmas Tree Burn
When: Friday, January 8, 2027, at 5 pm, weather permitting. Where: check solvangusa.com.
The season closes with a great bonfire of the village’s Christmas trees, supervised by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Danish Christmas Treats and Shops
- Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery: kringle, butter cookies and apple strudel on Mission Drive; go before 9:30 am.
- Birkholm’s Bakery & Cafe: family run on Alisal Road since 1951, known for cream puffs and bear claws.
- Solvang Restaurant: warm æbleskiver with raspberry jam from a walk up window on Copenhagen Drive.
- Bit O’Denmark: a Danish dinner of flæskesteg and frikadeller on Alisal Road before a late show.
- Jule Hus: the village Christmas shop on Mission Drive, full of Scandinavian ornaments and nisse figures.
- Hans Christian Andersen Museum: small and free, above The Book Loft on Mission Drive, and a good prelude to the candlelight tour.
Bakeries sell out of favorites by mid afternoon in December, and holiday hours can change, so go early.
Tips for Visiting Solvang in December
- Go midweek. Weeknights are far calmer; skip Thanksgiving Saturday, the busiest night of the season.
- Arrive before 5 pm. Parking is free on the street and in public lots, and easiest to find before the first show.
- Dress in layers. December days are often mild, but valley evenings turn cold quickly, sometimes near freezing.
- Book tours early. Candlelight and nisse walking tours sell out on popular weekends.
- Plan around Christmas Day. Most shops, bakeries and tasting rooms close or keep short hours on December 25; the light show is scheduled nightly, but confirm on solvangusa.com.
