Fall is the season the Santa Ynez Valley shows its warmest side. The summer crowds thin out, the vineyards turn gold and rust, and every winery you pass is deep in harvest. At Polo House Hotel, we live and work here year-round, and we can tell you honestly that autumn is when the valley feels most like itself.

This guide is our field notes on the best things to do in Santa Ynez this fall: the wineries we send guests to during crush, the small-town restaurants worth the drive, and the walks that turn cinematic in October and November. Whether you have a long weekend or a full week, use it as your starting point.

Why Fall Is the Best Time to Visit Santa Ynez Valley

Locals quietly consider September through November the valley’s best season, and there are three simple reasons.

Harvest is happening. Winemakers are working the crush pad, the cellars smell of fresh fruit, and many estates host small release parties and harvest events you will not find in summer.

The light gets long and gold. Vineyard rows shift to yellow, red, and copper, while the oaks stay green, which gives the hills a rich two-tone look you will not see any other time of year. The cottonwoods and sycamores along the creeks follow later in the season.

The weather cooperates. October highs usually sit in the mid to upper 70s (with the occasional warm spell well above that), easing to around 70 by November. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are warm, and evenings finally cool down enough for a sweater by the fire pit.

> Local tip: The best window for vineyard color is usually mid-October through early November. If foliage is your priority, aim for that stretch.

The Best Wineries to Visit in the Santa Ynez Valley in the Fall

The valley has well over 100 tasting rooms spread across Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Solvang, Ballard, Los Alamos, and Buellton. In the fall, these are the estates we recommend most often to our guests. Book ahead: weekend slots fill fast during harvest.

Firestone Vineyard

Firestone was the first estate winery in Santa Barbara County, and the view from its hillside over the vineyard is worth the drive up Zaca Station Road on its own. In autumn the rows below the tasting room turn red and orange, and the shaded patio is our favorite spot for a late-morning pour.

  • Rating: 4.5 stars (300 reviews)
  • Address: 5017 Zaca Station Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441
  • Hours: Open daily, 11 AM to 5 PM
  • Phone: (805) 688-3940
  • What to order: The estate Cabernet Sauvignon and a reserve tasting

Sunstone Winery

Sunstone feels less like a Santa Ynez tasting room and more like a Provençal estate: a stone courtyard, lavender beds, olive trees, and cellars built into the hillside. In the fall the lavender quiets down, the vines turn, and the whole property takes on a golden-hour quality that guests always comment on. It is also one of the wineries our concierge books most often.

  • Rating: 4.4 stars (478 reviews)
  • Address: 125 N Refugio Rd, Santa Ynez, CA 93460
  • Hours: Open daily, 11 AM to 5 PM
  • Phone: (805) 688-9463
  • What to order: A flight of the Rhône-style reds, ideally out on the terrace

Beckmen Vineyards

If you only visit one winery for its setting, make it Beckmen. The family farms its Purisima Mountain Vineyard biodynamically, and the picnic gazebos sit beside a pond framed by oaks and vines. Pick up bread and cheese at a Los Olivos market on the way and settle in for the afternoon.

  • Rating: 4.7 stars (153 reviews)
  • Address: 2670 Ontiveros Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441
  • Hours: Open daily, 11 AM to 5 PM
  • Phone: (805) 688-8664

Buttonwood Farm & Vineyard

Buttonwood is where we send guests who want the full farm experience. Alongside the vines there are orchards (the persimmons ripen in the fall), a garden full of picnic tables, and a tasting room that feels like a friend’s country porch. Their Sauvignon Blanc is a valley classic, but autumn is when the reds start to shine.

Rusack Vineyards

Rusack sits deep in Ballard Canyon, and the drive in is half the reason to go. Its oak-shaded deck is one of the most peaceful settings in the valley, looking out over vines and golden hills, and the Ballard Canyon Syrah is a bottle we love to open on a cool fall evening.

Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard

Fess Parker is a valley classic and a great stop for first-time visitors. The Foxen Canyon setting is lovely in fall, when the trees around the lawn turn, and the tasting room is comfortable and generous with its time. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lineup is a fair snapshot of what the region does well.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars (367 reviews)
  • Address: 6200 Foxen Canyon Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441

Foxen Vineyard & Winery

Foxen anchors the northern end of the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, run by a family that has farmed this canyon for generations, and the tasting room still has a working-ranch character guests remember. In the fall, the drive up Foxen Canyon Road is one of the prettiest in the county, with oaks framing the road the whole way.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars (76 reviews)
  • Address: 7600 Foxen Canyon Rd, Santa Maria, CA 93454

Zaca Mesa Winery

Zaca Mesa was one of the early champions of Rhône varieties in California, and it still deserves the drive up Foxen Canyon Road. The big lawn and giant chess set make it a favorite for groups, and the Syrah program is one of the most consistent in the valley.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars (157 reviews)
  • Address: 6905 Foxen Canyon Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441
  • Hours: Open daily, 11 AM to 4 PM

> Good to know: Most tasting rooms charge somewhere between $25 and $50 per flight, and many waive the fee with a bottle purchase. A designated driver, a private car, or a guided wine tour is the smart play if you plan to visit more than two wineries in a day, and our concierge is happy to arrange tastings for you.

Where to Eat in the Santa Ynez Valley in Fall

Fall is when valley kitchens lean into what the farms bring in: squash, apples, wild mushrooms, and the last of the summer tomatoes. These are the tables we send guests to most often between September and November.

Bell’s

Bell’s is the Michelin-recognized bistro in Los Alamos that helped put the north valley on every serious diner’s map. The room is small and warm, the wine list runs deep, and the seasonal menu leans French with California produce. It is worth planning a fall visit around.

  • Address: 406 Bell St, Los Alamos, CA 93440
  • Hours: Thursday to Monday, lunch 11 AM to 3 PM and dinner 5 to 8:30 PM; closed Tuesday and Wednesday

The Hitching Post II

If you have seen the movie _Sideways_, you already know the Hitching Post. This Buellton steakhouse has been grilling over a red oak fire for decades, and its house Pinot Noir is a real program, not a novelty. It gets busy, so book a table ahead.

  • Address: 406 E Hwy 246, Buellton, CA 93427

More Things to Do in Santa Ynez This Fall, Beyond the Tasting Room

The valley is more than wine. Fall opens up the trails, the gardens, and the small-town main streets. These are the stops we build a slow day around.

Old Mission Santa Inés

Founded in 1804, Mission Santa Inés is a quiet, moving stop and one of the 21 historic California missions. The gardens, the bell tower, and the museum are all worth an hour, and the low fall light on the white walls is beautiful.

Nojoqui Falls Park

Just south of Solvang, Nojoqui Falls is a short, shaded walk through oaks and sycamores to a waterfall of roughly 80 feet. In a dry fall the falls may be little more than a trickle, so it is at its most dramatic after the first good rain, but the canyon walk is pleasant either way. Bring a picnic for the tables near the parking area.

Elverhøj Museum of History & Art

Elverhøj is the small, elegant museum that tells the real Danish story of Solvang. The rotating art shows are surprisingly good, and the building itself is worth the visit for its architecture alone. It makes a perfect quiet hour between tastings.

Yes, ostriches. It sounds like a roadside stunt, and it is genuinely delightful; guests come back grinning every time. It sits right on Highway 246 between Buellton and Solvang, so you can feed a very large bird, take the photo, and be back on the wine trail in under an hour.

A Perfect Fall Weekend in the Santa Ynez Valley

Here is the three-day rhythm we build most often for our fall guests. Adjust as needed.

Friday. Arrive by mid-afternoon (check-in runs 4 to 6 PM). Wander downtown Santa Ynez, then settle in for a slow seafood dinner at Bar Le Côte in Los Olivos.

Saturday. Coffee and breakfast at the hotel, then two wineries along Foxen Canyon Road (Fess Parker and Zaca Mesa pair well). Take a late picnic lunch at Beckmen, head back to rest, and finish with dinner at Bell’s in Los Alamos.

Sunday. A morning walk at Old Mission Santa Inés or Nojoqui Falls, then a stroll through Solvang. Spend a relaxed afternoon at Buttonwood or Sunstone before the drive home.

> Local tip: If you are visiting in September or early October, keep a Sunday afternoon open for polo at La Herradura. Watching a match fieldside is a beautiful way to spend a fall day, even if you have never seen the sport before.
